What a great essay. Thanks for sharing your memories. I moved here a year before you did in 1978 and also worked in the arts running the King County Arts Commission in the mid 80’s. My friend from that time are my family now. You captured the changes. My heart breaks to see how Seattle is losing its soul. Hope is in the young artists.
We are in an earthquake of losses to the arts community now. We can also add John Behnke to the list. It is definitely heartbreaking and along with the unbelieveable changes within the federal gov't, it is hard to predict how the world will change. I am thankful that the community is still productive and full of so many creative and wonderful people, but the losses show how fragile it is. Thanks, Marcie, for your thoughtful and continued observations.
This wonderful tribute captures well the people we’ve lost and the impact they made. Thank you for bringing them together here. So much loss in a short period of time amplifies the needed conversation about how to sustain our creative community.
I also worry for the future of the arts in the PNW (as well as what the Kennedy Center takeover will mean). It’s easier to stick with subscriptions and memberships to the tried and true, but if a thriving arts scene is a goal, then supporting newcomers and innovators must also be a priority. Good food for thought. Thank you, Marcie.
